Narrative:
During cruise clt-mke, a handicapped passenger with multiple sclerosis became stuck in the toilet, called for and was promptly helped up by flight attendants. Due to bleeding, rptedly from vaginal area, the aid of a nurse was solicited. The passenger was made comfortable and compresses were used. Further examination eventually caused the nurse to suspect abnormal bleeding. Special handling was requested from chicago center and we proceeded direct to mke with straight in, expedited descent and landing on runway 1 mke. Paramedics met the flight, examined the patient and took her to a hospital. The paramedics commended the flight attendants for their actions and the use of compresses to minimize the bleeding. What really caused the problem? The passenger used the toilet improperly. She left the toilet lid and seat up, sat in the toilet bowl and as a result became stuck. Possible contributing factors: the passenger was a multiple sclerosis patient. The venturi action in the design of the toilet may have created suction pull on the body of the passenger. Note: systems design should keep such a situation from being harmful on an medium large transport aircraft and protect a passenger from injury.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PAX IS INJURED AS A RESULT OF BECOMING 'STUCK' ON THE TOILET SEAT OF AN ACR MLG IN CRUISE.
Narrative: DURING CRUISE CLT-MKE, A HANDICAPPED PAX WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS BECAME STUCK IN THE TOILET, CALLED FOR AND WAS PROMPTLY HELPED UP BY FLT ATTENDANTS. DUE TO BLEEDING, RPTEDLY FROM VAGINAL AREA, THE AID OF A NURSE WAS SOLICITED. THE PAX WAS MADE COMFORTABLE AND COMPRESSES WERE USED. FURTHER EXAMINATION EVENTUALLY CAUSED THE NURSE TO SUSPECT ABNORMAL BLEEDING. SPECIAL HANDLING WAS REQUESTED FROM CHICAGO CTR AND WE PROCEEDED DIRECT TO MKE WITH STRAIGHT IN, EXPEDITED DSCNT AND LNDG ON RWY 1 MKE. PARAMEDICS MET THE FLT, EXAMINED THE PATIENT AND TOOK HER TO A HOSPITAL. THE PARAMEDICS COMMENDED THE FLT ATTENDANTS FOR THEIR ACTIONS AND THE USE OF COMPRESSES TO MINIMIZE THE BLEEDING. WHAT REALLY CAUSED THE PROBLEM? THE PAX USED THE TOILET IMPROPERLY. SHE LEFT THE TOILET LID AND SEAT UP, SAT IN THE TOILET BOWL AND AS A RESULT BECAME STUCK. POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: THE PAX WAS A MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PATIENT. THE VENTURI ACTION IN THE DESIGN OF THE TOILET MAY HAVE CREATED SUCTION PULL ON THE BODY OF THE PAX. NOTE: SYSTEMS DESIGN SHOULD KEEP SUCH A SITUATION FROM BEING HARMFUL ON AN MLG ACFT AND PROTECT A PAX FROM INJURY.
