Narrative:
Flight was mry to lax. I was the PF, my first officer was the PNF. We were crossing the smo VOR, and approach asked 'if we have traffic 1 O'clock, widebody transport Y 2500.' first officer replies 'traffic in sight.' approach says 'I'm sorry widebody transport X, descend to 2500 follow that widebody transport X to 24R. Clear visual. First officer replies 'widebody transport X in sight 2500 ft, follow widebody transport X, cleared visual 24R.' I started my descent, leaving 5000. I waited for the widebody transport to be abeam us before I turned base leg. I want to give us some space between the widebody transport and stay high to avoid wake. I turned final. The widebody transport was turning off 24R about 2 dots high then handed off to tower 133.90. Lax tower says 'XXX are you following that widebody transport.' first officer replies, 'yes, XXX.' tower says '11 O'clock low. We were about 500 ft above and 1/4 mi behind. First officer replies, 'we're following that widebody transport. Insight, we need 24L.' tower says 'clear to land 24L.' we land west ith no problems. Lax approach gave us the wrong widebody transport or we saw the wrong one. We didn't know there were 2 wdbs. Approach should have told us and gave a landmark to pick up the widebody transport. If I was lower it could've been a problem.
