Narrative:
Was returning from practice approachs with instructor. Upon removing my hood, instructor pulled power for a simulated engine out. We were at 2000 ft (pattern altitude is 1340 at gai) we were southwest of approach end of runway 32 (which has a r-hand pattern). By the time I realized we were coming in on a base, we saw another aircraft mid-base (a correct right base) and another on final. My instructor announced simulated engine out, (montgomery traffic, small aircraft aircraft simulated engine out'). He told me to continue the approach. The other aircraft evidently slowed down but protested and asked for our tail number. In retrospect, I should've realized where we were at 2000 and used that altitude to enter pattern properly (to whatever extent possible) or discontinued the practice approach.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT INSTRUCTOR OF SMA ACFT GAVE PRIVATE PLT STUDENT AN ENG OUT EMER LNDG OVER A NON TWR ARPT RESULTING IN TURNS FOR LNDG OPPOSITE TO THAT DESIGNATED.
Narrative: WAS RETURNING FROM PRACTICE APCHS WITH INSTRUCTOR. UPON REMOVING MY HOOD, INSTRUCTOR PULLED PWR FOR A SIMULATED ENG OUT. WE WERE AT 2000 FT (PATTERN ALT IS 1340 AT GAI) WE WERE SW OF APCH END OF RWY 32 (WHICH HAS A R-HAND PATTERN). BY THE TIME I REALIZED WE WERE COMING IN ON A BASE, WE SAW ANOTHER ACFT MID-BASE (A CORRECT R BASE) AND ANOTHER ON FINAL. MY INSTRUCTOR ANNOUNCED SIMULATED ENG OUT, (MONTGOMERY TFC, SMA ACFT SIMULATED ENG OUT'). HE TOLD ME TO CONTINUE THE APCH. THE OTHER ACFT EVIDENTLY SLOWED DOWN BUT PROTESTED AND ASKED FOR OUR TAIL NUMBER. IN RETROSPECT, I SHOULD'VE REALIZED WHERE WE WERE AT 2000 AND USED THAT ALT TO ENTER PATTERN PROPERLY (TO WHATEVER EXTENT POSSIBLE) OR DISCONTINUED THE PRACTICE APCH.
