Narrative:
While taxiing out to runway 1, I asked first officer to start #1 engine per company procedure. During the start sequence the steering performance was decaying and I inadvertently reached down for the hydraulic pump override. I was steering 'mostly straight' and realized the pump was not available. But in that moment or 2 I had passed the hold line and was on the runway. I glanced left on final and finished crossing the runway figuring that off the runway was better than on. Per company procedure, the first officer was 'inside' during the start. The incursion was completely my responsibility. Human performance considerations: my sleep was interrupted by telephone late night prior. Report was early hour. Further, during past 8 months I had 8 hours sleep every night and past 2 weeks since return to duty I was averaging 5-6 hours per night. This series of flts had mechanical interruptions each leg, putting us XA15 late at time of incursion. Having flown this plane since 1985, with the caveat of no power disruption allowed to ahrs/EFIS. The new company procedure of starting engine during taxi is still distracting to me when the tubes blank and flash during said start. I must emphasize that the first officer performed exactly to company procedure at all times and I strayed across the hold line on my own. I must add, however, I miss his eyes and aid during these starts.

Title: UNAUTHORIZED RWY ENTRY XING OP.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING OUT TO RWY 1, I ASKED FO TO START #1 ENG PER COMPANY PROC. DURING THE START SEQUENCE THE STEERING PERFORMANCE WAS DECAYING AND I INADVERTENTLY REACHED DOWN FOR THE HYD PUMP OVERRIDE. I WAS STEERING 'MOSTLY STRAIGHT' AND REALIZED THE PUMP WAS NOT AVAILABLE. BUT IN THAT MOMENT OR 2 I HAD PASSED THE HOLD LINE AND WAS ON THE RWY. I GLANCED L ON FINAL AND FINISHED XING THE RWY FIGURING THAT OFF THE RWY WAS BETTER THAN ON. PER COMPANY PROC, THE FO WAS 'INSIDE' DURING THE START. THE INCURSION WAS COMPLETELY MY RESPONSIBILITY. HUMAN PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: MY SLEEP WAS INTERRUPTED BY TELEPHONE LATE NIGHT PRIOR. RPT WAS EARLY HR. FURTHER, DURING PAST 8 MONTHS I HAD 8 HRS SLEEP EVERY NIGHT AND PAST 2 WKS SINCE RETURN TO DUTY I WAS AVERAGING 5-6 HRS PER NIGHT. THIS SERIES OF FLTS HAD MECHANICAL INTERRUPTIONS EACH LEG, PUTTING US XA15 LATE AT TIME OF INCURSION. HAVING FLOWN THIS PLANE SINCE 1985, WITH THE CAVEAT OF NO PWR DISRUPTION ALLOWED TO AHRS/EFIS. THE NEW COMPANY PROC OF STARTING ENG DURING TAXI IS STILL DISTRACTING TO ME WHEN THE TUBES BLANK AND FLASH DURING SAID START. I MUST EMPHASIZE THAT THE FO PERFORMED EXACTLY TO COMPANY PROC AT ALL TIMES AND I STRAYED ACROSS THE HOLD LINE ON MY OWN. I MUST ADD, HOWEVER, I MISS HIS EYES AND AID DURING THESE STARTS.
