Narrative:
Proceeding south to colts neck VOR on the 350 degree radial. Inbound at 6000 ft, we received a TCASII alert to 'climb.' traffic previously unrpted by ATC illuminated our TCASII. We observed traffic conflict on the TCASII and captain initiated a climb while I called ATC and advised them of our actions. There was no congestion on the frequency. The controller was not excited by this news at all. He stated that he knew of the traffic already. If he would have advised us of this traffic information, we may have been able to visually spot the other aircraft and therefore verify need to climb.
