Narrative:
On approach vectors, we were advised of traffic at our altitude at 12- 1 O'clock position opposite direction at 3 mi. TCASII issued TA. As I looked for the traffic, I caught sight of it passing less than 1 mi off our right wing, same altitude. As I told the captain I had him in sight, we got another 'traffic, traffic' advisory, followed 1-2 seconds later by 'climb, climb now.' the captain (already hand-flying) pulled up, added power as I called approach to advise him we were climbing due to TCASII RA. He said 'roger.' at about 3500 ft, TCASII said to monitor vertical speed then, 'clear of conflict,' we leveled off and descended back to 3000 ft advising ATC of descent back to 3000 ft. I had seen the second target on TCASII at 3-4 mi when we had been advised of the first one I saw. I had thought that the second aircraft was under ATC control, but that wasn't the case. TCASII saved us on this one, as it showed the traffic going right under us as we pulled up. We never saw him visually.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MLG FLC REACTS TO AN RA AND MISSES A SECOND INTRUDER ACFT. THE FIRST ACFT HAD BEEN POINTED OUT BY THE APCH CTLR.
Narrative: ON APCH VECTORS, WE WERE ADVISED OF TFC AT OUR ALT AT 12- 1 O'CLOCK POS OPPOSITE DIRECTION AT 3 MI. TCASII ISSUED TA. AS I LOOKED FOR THE TFC, I CAUGHT SIGHT OF IT PASSING LESS THAN 1 MI OFF OUR R WING, SAME ALT. AS I TOLD THE CAPT I HAD HIM IN SIGHT, WE GOT ANOTHER 'TFC, TFC' ADVISORY, FOLLOWED 1-2 SECONDS LATER BY 'CLB, CLB NOW.' THE CAPT (ALREADY HAND-FLYING) PULLED UP, ADDED PWR AS I CALLED APCH TO ADVISE HIM WE WERE CLBING DUE TO TCASII RA. HE SAID 'ROGER.' AT ABOUT 3500 FT, TCASII SAID TO MONITOR VERT SPD THEN, 'CLR OF CONFLICT,' WE LEVELED OFF AND DSNDED BACK TO 3000 FT ADVISING ATC OF DSCNT BACK TO 3000 FT. I HAD SEEN THE SECOND TARGET ON TCASII AT 3-4 MI WHEN WE HAD BEEN ADVISED OF THE FIRST ONE I SAW. I HAD THOUGHT THAT THE SECOND ACFT WAS UNDER ATC CTL, BUT THAT WASN'T THE CASE. TCASII SAVED US ON THIS ONE, AS IT SHOWED THE TFC GOING RIGHT UNDER US AS WE PULLED UP. WE NEVER SAW HIM VISUALLY.
