Narrative:
After receiving an amended taxi clearance, we taxied out of the ramp area with clearance to taxi 'T,' 'a,' 'C' to 27L, hold short of 27R. Just as we approached 'a' on 'T' the flight engineer passed up our numbers and the captain picked them up off the console and simultaneously made a 1/2 left on to 'X' instead of a 90 degree left onto 'a.' I noticed just as we approached the edge of runway 27R and asked if we had been cleared to cross. The captain stopped partially on runway 27R, saw an medium large transport 1 1/4 mi final and decided to cross 27R obliquely to 'C.' it was uneventful but the first officer is to receive the numbers and read them. The captain probably shouldn't pick up numbers while turning or even taxiing the aircraft. Supplemental information from acn 225668: we started taxiing and I received the load closeout and placed them on the center console. The captain picked up the closeout while taxiing and apparently took a 1/2 turn from 'a' to 'X' instead of 'a' to 'C.' my recommendation is to have capts taxi and first officer's read aloud the load closeout!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LGT TAXIES ON WRONG TAXIWAY. CROSSES RWY WHEN CLRED HOLD SHORT.
Narrative: AFTER RECEIVING AN AMENDED TAXI CLRNC, WE TAXIED OUT OF THE RAMP AREA WITH CLRNC TO TAXI 'T,' 'A,' 'C' TO 27L, HOLD SHORT OF 27R. JUST AS WE APCHED 'A' ON 'T' THE FE PASSED UP OUR NUMBERS AND THE CAPT PICKED THEM UP OFF THE CONSOLE AND SIMULTANEOUSLY MADE A 1/2 L ON TO 'X' INSTEAD OF A 90 DEG L ONTO 'A.' I NOTICED JUST AS WE APCHED THE EDGE OF RWY 27R AND ASKED IF WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO CROSS. THE CAPT STOPPED PARTIALLY ON RWY 27R, SAW AN MLG 1 1/4 MI FINAL AND DECIDED TO CROSS 27R OBLIQUELY TO 'C.' IT WAS UNEVENTFUL BUT THE FO IS TO RECEIVE THE NUMBERS AND READ THEM. THE CAPT PROBABLY SHOULDN'T PICK UP NUMBERS WHILE TURNING OR EVEN TAXIING THE ACFT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 225668: WE STARTED TAXIING AND I RECEIVED THE LOAD CLOSEOUT AND PLACED THEM ON THE CTR CONSOLE. THE CAPT PICKED UP THE CLOSEOUT WHILE TAXIING AND APPARENTLY TOOK A 1/2 TURN FROM 'A' TO 'X' INSTEAD OF 'A' TO 'C.' MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO HAVE CAPTS TAXI AND FO'S READ ALOUD THE LOAD CLOSEOUT!
