Narrative:

After takeoff from iah, the left main landing gear failed to fully retract. This was noticed by a gear red light on panel. As speed increased, noise and vibration resulted. After about 10 to 15 seconds the red light extinguished and the noise and vibration stopped. We asked tower to return. The gear extended normally (3 green on 2 independent panels). We landed at iah safely and without incident. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter is unaware of what caused the gear problem. He said that the aircraft has had no history of any gear problems that he is aware of.
