Narrative:
After takeoff from mexico city, destination sfo, as we transitioned to climb phase, fire warning light, APU fire handle light came on and fire bell sounded. We performed flight handbook procedure (pulled APU fire handle, rotated handle to discharge APU fire extinguisher bottle). APU fire handle light went out. No other fire indications. We continued to climb while evaluating situation. Tested fire warning lights. All tested good. We reviewed our options, sent ACARS message to our company dispatch, returned to mexico city for landing as a precaution. Overweight landing at mexico city. Even though fire warning light was out, we judged the best/safest course of action was to land over maximum allowable landing weight. Overweight landing was recorded in aircraft logbook. Required inspection was completed by our airline maintenance personnel in mexico city. Exceeded maximum landing weight by approximately 1000 pounds. No indication of actual APU fire or overheat was discovered.
