Narrative:
En route to rdu we were cleared to descend to 8000 ft by rdu approach. Our clearance was then amended to stop descent at 10000 ft. Level at 10000 ft we received TCASII TA of target at 10 O'clock, approximately 8 mi, minus 1000 ft and climbing. The advisory turned into an RA of climb in excess of 1500 FPM, traffic 10 O'clock minus 200 and climbing. As we climbed through 10800 ft, we established visual contact with traffic 9:30-10 O'clock less than a mi indicating minus 800 ft. As we started our climb I informed rdu approach that we were climbing TCASII. I received no response. After we cleared the conflict and were descending back to 1000 ft I queried rdu approach as to whether he had heard me say climbing/TCASII. He confirmed that he had. Our next contact was with an obviously different controller on the same frequency. The flight continued uneventfully.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF ACR LTT ACFT DEVIATED FROM ASSIGNED ALT IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA.
Narrative: ENRTE TO RDU WE WERE CLRED TO DSND TO 8000 FT BY RDU APCH. OUR CLRNC WAS THEN AMENDED TO STOP DSCNT AT 10000 FT. LEVEL AT 10000 FT WE RECEIVED TCASII TA OF TARGET AT 10 O'CLOCK, APPROX 8 MI, MINUS 1000 FT AND CLBING. THE ADVISORY TURNED INTO AN RA OF CLB IN EXCESS OF 1500 FPM, TFC 10 O'CLOCK MINUS 200 AND CLBING. AS WE CLBED THROUGH 10800 FT, WE ESTABLISHED VISUAL CONTACT WITH TFC 9:30-10 O'CLOCK LESS THAN A MI INDICATING MINUS 800 FT. AS WE STARTED OUR CLB I INFORMED RDU APCH THAT WE WERE CLBING TCASII. I RECEIVED NO RESPONSE. AFTER WE CLRED THE CONFLICT AND WERE DSNDING BACK TO 1000 FT I QUERIED RDU APCH AS TO WHETHER HE HAD HEARD ME SAY CLBING/TCASII. HE CONFIRMED THAT HE HAD. OUR NEXT CONTACT WAS WITH AN OBVIOUSLY DIFFERENT CTLR ON THE SAME FREQ. THE FLT CONTINUED UNEVENTFULLY.
