Narrative:
While operating in the pattern at hef the aircraft my student and I were flying was cleared to land 16L, and was also informed we were '#1 and to watch for wide base traffic for runway 16L.' continuing our approach to runway 16R as cleared, the tower casually stated 'looks like there is 2 on final for 16R.' in hearing that statement I looked out the back window of the aircraft and saw the other aircraft directly behind at a range of 50-100 ft. Immediately I took over from the student and leveled off our descent and preceded to abort the landing and went around for another landing. In review of the event I saw 2 major things that could have prevented this. One the tower should have been more aware that aircraft behind us was extremely close and should of had them take evasive actions long before the casual comment was made over the frequency. Second is that the pilot of the second aircraft should of used better judgement in keeping a safe separation of the aircraft.

Narrative: WHILE OPERATING IN THE PATTERN AT HEF THE ACFT MY STUDENT AND I WERE FLYING WAS CLRED TO LAND 16L, AND WAS ALSO INFORMED WE WERE '#1 AND TO WATCH FOR WIDE BASE TFC FOR RWY 16L.' CONTINUING OUR APCH TO RWY 16R AS CLRED, THE TWR CASUALLY STATED 'LOOKS LIKE THERE IS 2 ON FINAL FOR 16R.' IN HEARING THAT STATEMENT I LOOKED OUT THE BACK WINDOW OF THE ACFT AND SAW THE OTHER ACFT DIRECTLY BEHIND AT A RANGE OF 50-100 FT. IMMEDIATELY I TOOK OVER FROM THE STUDENT AND LEVELED OFF OUR DSCNT AND PRECEDED TO ABORT THE LNDG AND WENT AROUND FOR ANOTHER LNDG. IN REVIEW OF THE EVENT I SAW 2 MAJOR THINGS THAT COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS. ONE THE TWR SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE AWARE THAT ACFT BEHIND US WAS EXTREMELY CLOSE AND SHOULD OF HAD THEM TAKE EVASIVE ACTIONS LONG BEFORE THE CASUAL COMMENT WAS MADE OVER THE FREQ. SECOND IS THAT THE PLT OF THE SECOND ACFT SHOULD OF USED BETTER JUDGEMENT IN KEEPING A SAFE SEPARATION OF THE ACFT.
