Narrative:

Started #2 engine after completion of pushback. Before reaching idle, engine had hung start and began to roll back. Terminated start, then cleared engine and restarted normally. Rescue trucks appeared and surrounded aircraft. Asked ground control if they called them. Ground responded no and reported that they saw no difficulty or problem with aircraft. Our mechanic checked over engine and reported that everything looked ok, so proceeded with flight. Sometimes big turbofan engines torch and/or smoke during start in cold WX. I guess someone saw this, thought something was wrong with our engine and called out the trucks. It is reassuring to know that people are alert, but maybe they should be briefed better on the starting characteristics of big fan engines.

Title: ACR WDB ACFT JET ENG 'HUNG START' RESULTING IN THE ARPT FIRE TRUCKS RESPONDING TO THE ACFT DUE SMOKE FROM THE ENG.

Narrative: STARTED #2 ENG AFTER COMPLETION OF PUSHBACK. BEFORE REACHING IDLE, ENG HAD HUNG START AND BEGAN TO ROLL BACK. TERMINATED START, THEN CLRED ENG AND RESTARTED NORMALLY. RESCUE TRUCKS APPEARED AND SURROUNDED ACFT. ASKED GND CTL IF THEY CALLED THEM. GND RESPONDED NO AND RPTED THAT THEY SAW NO DIFFICULTY OR PROB WITH ACFT. OUR MECH CHKED OVER ENG AND RPTED THAT EVERYTHING LOOKED OK, SO PROCEEDED WITH FLT. SOMETIMES BIG TURBOFAN ENGS TORCH AND/OR SMOKE DURING START IN COLD WX. I GUESS SOMEONE SAW THIS, THOUGHT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH OUR ENG AND CALLED OUT THE TRUCKS. IT IS REASSURING TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE ARE ALERT, BUT MAYBE THEY SHOULD BE BRIEFED BETTER ON THE STARTING CHARACTERISTICS OF BIG FAN ENGS.
