Narrative:
During climb out from dfw had tail compartment temperature high light. Used quick reference handbook procedures to successfully extinguish light. Declared emergency to get direct routing to dfw because of icing conditions and the lack of airfoil anti-ice. Performance of event would have been improved by devoting entire time to quick reference handbook procedure instead of talking to ATC while accomplishing procedure.
