Narrative:
Air carrier X on a vector under ATC control to runway 33L, heading 290 degrees, cleared to descend to 2500 ft, descending to 2500 ft. Approach called light transport Y at 11 O'clock and 3 mi. First officer called it in sight. I saw it at same time, disconnected autoflt system and initiated evasive maneuver. Aircraft was much closer than called by approach closing at approximately 30 degree angle and descending. During my maneuver approach stated 'follow that light transport Y cleared for visual approach.' my aircraft speed was 210 KIAS, other aircraft unknown. Pilot of other aircraft never had us in sight. Other aircraft was an light transport. ATC was in contact with other aircraft. It appears ATC failed to keep separation and rapidly dumped a visual approach to follow it avoid problems for himself. ATC facility supervisor contacted and stated he did not consider it a near miss. I was not advised of other aircraft presence prior to this traffic reference call.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR X VISUAL APCH TO FOLLOW LTT Y TOOK EVASIVE ACTION FROM LTT Y. SEE AND AVOID CONCEPT.
Narrative: ACR X ON A VECTOR UNDER ATC CTL TO RWY 33L, HDG 290 DEGS, CLRED TO DSND TO 2500 FT, DSNDING TO 2500 FT. APCH CALLED LTT Y AT 11 O'CLOCK AND 3 MI. FO CALLED IT IN SIGHT. I SAW IT AT SAME TIME, DISCONNECTED AUTOFLT SYS AND INITIATED EVASIVE MANEUVER. ACFT WAS MUCH CLOSER THAN CALLED BY APCH CLOSING AT APPROX 30 DEG ANGLE AND DSNDING. DURING MY MANEUVER APCH STATED 'FOLLOW THAT LTT Y CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH.' MY ACFT SPD WAS 210 KIAS, OTHER ACFT UNKNOWN. PLT OF OTHER ACFT NEVER HAD US IN SIGHT. OTHER ACFT WAS AN LTT. ATC WAS IN CONTACT WITH OTHER ACFT. IT APPEARS ATC FAILED TO KEEP SEPARATION AND RAPIDLY DUMPED A VISUAL APCH TO FOLLOW IT AVOID PROBS FOR HIMSELF. ATC FACILITY SUPVR CONTACTED AND STATED HE DID NOT CONSIDER IT A NEAR MISS. I WAS NOT ADVISED OF OTHER ACFT PRESENCE PRIOR TO THIS TFC REF CALL.
