Narrative:

Aircraft was en route sju from ord. On takeoff, pilot rotated and heard noise from aft of aircraft. Tail skid warning light stayed on after gear was raised. Suspected tail skid strike. Returned to ord and landed smoothly at 179000 pounds of weight. After landing and parked at gate, discovered tail skid broken (column sheared, pads missing), but cylinder not compressed. Probably over rotated. Supplemental information from acn 238821: after gear retraction tail skid light remained illuminated. Suspected tail skid strike and accomplished applicable procedures. Returned to ord and accomplished over weight landing procedure. In my opinion tail skid failed to operate normally causing increased damage. Compression clip on compression strut failed to shear causing incomplete compression of strut causing skid to receive greater impact forces than should be expected in this situation.

Title: CAPT OF LGT ACR ACFT INADVERTENTLY STRUCK THE TAIL SKID DURING TKOF RESULTING IN THE ACFT RETURNING TO LAND AND IN AN OVER LNDG WT CONDITION.

Narrative: ACFT WAS ENRTE SJU FROM ORD. ON TKOF, PLT ROTATED AND HEARD NOISE FROM AFT OF ACFT. TAIL SKID WARNING LIGHT STAYED ON AFTER GEAR WAS RAISED. SUSPECTED TAIL SKID STRIKE. RETURNED TO ORD AND LANDED SMOOTHLY AT 179000 LBS OF WT. AFTER LNDG AND PARKED AT GATE, DISCOVERED TAIL SKID BROKEN (COLUMN SHEARED, PADS MISSING), BUT CYLINDER NOT COMPRESSED. PROBABLY OVER ROTATED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 238821: AFTER GEAR RETRACTION TAIL SKID LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. SUSPECTED TAIL SKID STRIKE AND ACCOMPLISHED APPLICABLE PROCS. RETURNED TO ORD AND ACCOMPLISHED OVER WT LNDG PROC. IN MY OPINION TAIL SKID FAILED TO OPERATE NORMALLY CAUSING INCREASED DAMAGE. COMPRESSION CLIP ON COMPRESSION STRUT FAILED TO SHEAR CAUSING INCOMPLETE COMPRESSION OF STRUT CAUSING SKID TO RECEIVE GREATER IMPACT FORCES THAN SHOULD BE EXPECTED IN THIS SIT.
