Narrative:

During an annual inspection in which the owners were assisting in the work, the oil drain plug was left unsaftied. I did not service engine with oil, nor did I replace the drain plug. Another mechanic svced the oil, he and the owners then cowled up the engine. The aircraft flew 7.5 hours since the inspection and then the oil plug fell out at timmerman airport. Engine lost power and was feathered but landed without incident. The engine has been substantially damaged and will need overhaul before flight. I feel the cause of this incident was that the owners failed to properly install the plug. The other mechanic should have checked the plug when servicing the oil and I should have doublechked both of them before signing off the engine.
