Narrative:
While flying el nido arrival to sjc, ATC called traffic at about 20 mi at 1 O'clock. We continued and the target on TCASII was converging. He was 1000 ft below us and climbing. ATC cleared us from 10000 ft to 8000 ft. Traffic continued to close on us. We first got a TA and then when the traffic was 1 mi we saw him visually and got a monitor vertical speed command. At the closest point the TCASII showed the small aircraft at 300-400 ft below and climbing just under the captain's window.
