Narrative:
After takeoff and changed radio to bos departure control, I thought I heard instructions for egi to turn to 120 degree heading and climb to 8000 ft. I repeated the instructions, company egi turn right to 120 degrees and climb to 8000 ft. There was no contradictions from departure control, so I reset the MCP. Climbing through 6000 ft, I asked for a left deviation to avoid WX. Control asked what heading and I said 120 degrees. After a short pause, departure control said we were supposed to be at 5000 ft, heading 090 degrees. We immediately turned left and started a descent. The controller then called and said to maintain 8000 ft and turn to heading 040 degrees. After a couple of mins, he assigned another frequency and nothing more was said. Some factors that may have contributed. The normal departure runway at the time was runway 9, we needed runway 4R because of weight and wind. Shuttle eji departed just prior to us and e-j-I sounds like e-g-I when no prefix is used. We never received a TCASII resolution.

Title: ACR RESPONDS TO AND ACCEPTS CLRNC FOR ANOTHER ACFT. HDG DEV. ALT DEV.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF AND CHANGED RADIO TO BOS DEP CTL, I THOUGHT I HEARD INSTRUCTIONS FOR EGI TO TURN TO 120 DEG HDG AND CLB TO 8000 FT. I REPEATED THE INSTRUCTIONS, COMPANY EGI TURN R TO 120 DEGS AND CLB TO 8000 FT. THERE WAS NO CONTRADICTIONS FROM DEP CTL, SO I RESET THE MCP. CLBING THROUGH 6000 FT, I ASKED FOR A L DEV TO AVOID WX. CTL ASKED WHAT HDG AND I SAID 120 DEGS. AFTER A SHORT PAUSE, DEP CTL SAID WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE AT 5000 FT, HDG 090 DEGS. WE IMMEDIATELY TURNED L AND STARTED A DSCNT. THE CTLR THEN CALLED AND SAID TO MAINTAIN 8000 FT AND TURN TO HDG 040 DEGS. AFTER A COUPLE OF MINS, HE ASSIGNED ANOTHER FREQ AND NOTHING MORE WAS SAID. SOME FACTORS THAT MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED. THE NORMAL DEP RWY AT THE TIME WAS RWY 9, WE NEEDED RWY 4R BECAUSE OF WT AND WIND. SHUTTLE EJI DEPARTED JUST PRIOR TO US AND E-J-I SOUNDS LIKE E-G-I WHEN NO PREFIX IS USED. WE NEVER RECEIVED A TCASII RESOLUTION.
