Narrative:
At waukegan airport, il, while taxiing to runway 14, I switched to tower. I was #1 in sequence when I heard 'xxxxx position and hold.' thinking tower was talking to me, I responded, 'xxyxx position and hold runway 14.' there have been numerous occasions when tower was 1 digit off with my call sign. When tower said 'xxxxx cleared for takeoff,' I responded 'xxyxx cleared to go on runway 14.' I proceeded with the takeoff, climbed to altitude and proceeded on course. Shortly after takeoff, about 100-150 ft, I noticed an aircraft on the crosswind runway proceeding right to left. After 1 min or so, I responded to the tower's call that I contact them at the completion of the flight. I believe tower thought the other aircraft 'xxxxx' was on runway 14 and not runway 5. Tower anticipated the takeoff on runway 14 and was surprised when xxxxx took off on runway 5. For myself, I should have questioned the commands for 'xxxxx' and sought clarification. This situation recognizes the need to verify aircraft and runway and to request acknowledgement and runway assigned.

Title: C172 PLT RESPONDS TO TKOF CLRNC AT UGN TO FIND THAT THE CLRNC WAS FOR ACFT WITH SIMILAR ALPHA NUMERICS.
Narrative: AT WAUKEGAN ARPT, IL, WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 14, I SWITCHED TO TWR. I WAS #1 IN SEQUENCE WHEN I HEARD 'XXXXX POS AND HOLD.' THINKING TWR WAS TALKING TO ME, I RESPONDED, 'XXYXX POS AND HOLD RWY 14.' THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS OCCASIONS WHEN TWR WAS 1 DIGIT OFF WITH MY CALL SIGN. WHEN TWR SAID 'XXXXX CLRED FOR TKOF,' I RESPONDED 'XXYXX CLRED TO GO ON RWY 14.' I PROCEEDED WITH THE TKOF, CLBED TO ALT AND PROCEEDED ON COURSE. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF, ABOUT 100-150 FT, I NOTICED AN ACFT ON THE XWIND RWY PROCEEDING R TO L. AFTER 1 MIN OR SO, I RESPONDED TO THE TWR'S CALL THAT I CONTACT THEM AT THE COMPLETION OF THE FLT. I BELIEVE TWR THOUGHT THE OTHER ACFT 'XXXXX' WAS ON RWY 14 AND NOT RWY 5. TWR ANTICIPATED THE TKOF ON RWY 14 AND WAS SURPRISED WHEN XXXXX TOOK OFF ON RWY 5. FOR MYSELF, I SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED THE COMMANDS FOR 'XXXXX' AND SOUGHT CLARIFICATION. THIS SIT RECOGNIZES THE NEED TO VERIFY ACFT AND RWY AND TO REQUEST ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND RWY ASSIGNED.
