Narrative:
Inbound to the jefferson county airport we noticed several groups of aircraft close to the airport at low altitude. We were already cleared for a visual approach and received landing clearance for runway 16. As we were on a 2 mi final straight in to runway 16 I noticed an fgt on a tight in right base leg to runway 16 and we heard unusual xmissions on tower frequency like, 'break left, bank hard right.' I also saw a couple of aircraft making a low, low fly-by over runway 16. We realized then an air show in progress! That aircraft broke off his approach and zipped by us. Too close for comfort! I hope he had us in sight. Nothing on ATIS about air show!?! I called tower and was told there is no air show going on, it's 'aviation appreciation day!' what an excuse! My god, airplanes all over the place and too close to me. Ridiculous, unsafe.
