Narrative:
We were passed by the small aircraft Y. The aircraft appeared approximately 200 ft off the left wing, at our altitude. The other aircraft was seen by both myself and my student at the same time. It was faster than we were and rapidly pulled ahead. There was no time for evasive action. We could not see the other aircraft behind us. Shortly after, I questioned dab approach about the aircraft. The controller stated that he had traffic about 1 mi ahead of us 'with no altitude tag.' both aircraft had just crossed the lateral limits of the dab arsa. Immediately after the controller's response, the other aircraft said 'that's small aircraft Y, I'm northbound too....' small aircraft Y had just come on the frequency. Small aircraft Y was having difficulty filing or opening a new flight plan. Small aircraft Y apparently did not see us. It is possible that he 'had his head in the cockpit' dealing with his flight plan prior to passing us and establishing contact with daytona.

Title: SMA HAS NMAC WITH SECOND SMA WHILE ON AIRWAY.
Narrative: WE WERE PASSED BY THE SMA Y. THE ACFT APPEARED APPROX 200 FT OFF THE L WING, AT OUR ALT. THE OTHER ACFT WAS SEEN BY BOTH MYSELF AND MY STUDENT AT THE SAME TIME. IT WAS FASTER THAN WE WERE AND RAPIDLY PULLED AHEAD. THERE WAS NO TIME FOR EVASIVE ACTION. WE COULD NOT SEE THE OTHER ACFT BEHIND US. SHORTLY AFTER, I QUESTIONED DAB APCH ABOUT THE ACFT. THE CTLR STATED THAT HE HAD TFC ABOUT 1 MI AHEAD OF US 'WITH NO ALT TAG.' BOTH ACFT HAD JUST CROSSED THE LATERAL LIMITS OF THE DAB ARSA. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE CTLR'S RESPONSE, THE OTHER ACFT SAID 'THAT'S SMA Y, I'M NBOUND TOO....' SMA Y HAD JUST COME ON THE FREQ. SMA Y WAS HAVING DIFFICULTY FILING OR OPENING A NEW FLT PLAN. SMA Y APPARENTLY DID NOT SEE US. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT HE 'HAD HIS HEAD IN THE COCKPIT' DEALING WITH HIS FLT PLAN PRIOR TO PASSING US AND ESTABLISHING CONTACT WITH DAYTONA.
