Narrative:
Abq departure has had an ongoing problem with false radar/beacon targets around the airport. Typically, the false target will correspond to aircraft departing abq. As the aircraft lift off, a 'splat' or false target will appear several mi away, often in a high traffic area, and indicate the same beacon code as the departure. The following are typical examples of the false beacon targets observed in the abq arsa. Aircraft X was departing runway 8 squawking XXXX. When aircraft X was 10 mi south, sbound, a 'ghost' beacon appeared 7 mi west, on the final for runway 8, wbound. The 'ghost' was a strong 'splat' (unacquired beacon target) with identical beacon and mode C readout of the departure. MTR Y on final runway 8, about 10 mi out. False beacon target appeared same distance out, ese of the airport, with the same beacon and mode C as the MTR Y.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ABQ RADAR PROB NEW ASR-9 FALSE BEACON TARGETS.
Narrative: ABQ DEP HAS HAD AN ONGOING PROB WITH FALSE RADAR/BEACON TARGETS AROUND THE ARPT. TYPICALLY, THE FALSE TARGET WILL CORRESPOND TO ACFT DEPARTING ABQ. AS THE ACFT LIFT OFF, A 'SPLAT' OR FALSE TARGET WILL APPEAR SEVERAL MI AWAY, OFTEN IN A HIGH TFC AREA, AND INDICATE THE SAME BEACON CODE AS THE DEP. THE FOLLOWING ARE TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF THE FALSE BEACON TARGETS OBSERVED IN THE ABQ ARSA. ACFT X WAS DEPARTING RWY 8 SQUAWKING XXXX. WHEN ACFT X WAS 10 MI S, SBOUND, A 'GHOST' BEACON APPEARED 7 MI W, ON THE FINAL FOR RWY 8, WBOUND. THE 'GHOST' WAS A STRONG 'SPLAT' (UNACQUIRED BEACON TARGET) WITH IDENTICAL BEACON AND MODE C READOUT OF THE DEP. MTR Y ON FINAL RWY 8, ABOUT 10 MI OUT. FALSE BEACON TARGET APPEARED SAME DISTANCE OUT, ESE OF THE ARPT, WITH THE SAME BEACON AND MODE C AS THE MTR Y.
