Narrative:
While inbound to kaven intersection on scy arrival dfw approach control informed us that an light transport jet was overtaking us at 7000 ft. We observed aircraft on TCASII in that location that had visual contact with us. A few mins later we had visual contact at 9 O'clock 7000 ft. Approach asked if we could maintain visual contact so he could let aircraft Y down to 5000 MSL. We confirmed that we could. As aircraft passed through our altitude, pulling away slowly, we received an RA alert calling for a descent. The first officer flew the aircraft down as indicated until alert went out at 5600 ft. I notified approach we were deviating. When we reached 5600 ft, we started back to 6000. Approach control asked why we deviated just because we got RA with aircraft in sight. We informed them that we are to respond to RA's at all times. Ps: ATC was notified as aircraft was passing through 5900 MSL that we were deviating from assigned altitude.

I NOTIFIED APCH WE WERE DEVIATING. WHEN WE REACHED 5600 FT, WE STARTED BACK TO 6000. APCH CTL ASKED WHY WE DEVIATED JUST BECAUSE WE GOT RA WITH ACFT IN SIGHT. WE INFORMED THEM THAT WE ARE TO RESPOND TO RA'S AT ALL TIMES. PS: ATC WAS NOTIFIED AS ACFT WAS PASSING THROUGH 5900 MSL THAT WE WERE DEVIATING FROM ASSIGNED ALT.
