Narrative:

During the scheduled flight from ord to sdf and climbing south of ord there were thunderstorms in our route as we requested vectors to avoid WX. ATC notified us that if further vectors were required, we would have to go back to ord. Since we requested further vectors, we were ordered to go back to ord. The captain took over communications and requested direct sdf as ATC kept ordering us to go back to ord. A landing was uneventful at ord but the captain requested a full investigation of why we could not proceed to sdf and avoid WX.
