Narrative:
Descending into abq, heading approximately 260 degrees for visual approach to runway 8 at abq. Passing through 13500 ft, ATC amended our previous clearance to 9000 ft and told us to stop at 12000 ft due to traffic at 12 O'clock. As we leveled at 12000 ft we got a TA at 12 O'clock and 400 ft low. This rapidly changed to an RA to climb at 2000 FPM with a centered red square. Thanks to the ATC warning and the yellow TA, I was closely scanning the TCASII when we got the climb advisory. I was anticipating an RA and consequently was able to immediately respond. I climbed to 12500 ft and the first officer saw a red and white small aircraft pass 300 ft below and 300 ft to starboard. TCASII then reversed and I stopped at 12500 ft. The threat then cleared. ATC was advised and we completed the approach and landing.

Title: MLG RECEIVES TCASII RA ON DSCNT.
Narrative: DSNDING INTO ABQ, HDG APPROX 260 DEGS FOR VISUAL APCH TO RWY 8 AT ABQ. PASSING THROUGH 13500 FT, ATC AMENDED OUR PREVIOUS CLRNC TO 9000 FT AND TOLD US TO STOP AT 12000 FT DUE TO TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK. AS WE LEVELED AT 12000 FT WE GOT A TA AT 12 O'CLOCK AND 400 FT LOW. THIS RAPIDLY CHANGED TO AN RA TO CLB AT 2000 FPM WITH A CTRED RED SQUARE. THANKS TO THE ATC WARNING AND THE YELLOW TA, I WAS CLOSELY SCANNING THE TCASII WHEN WE GOT THE CLB ADVISORY. I WAS ANTICIPATING AN RA AND CONSEQUENTLY WAS ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY RESPOND. I CLBED TO 12500 FT AND THE FO SAW A RED AND WHITE SMA PASS 300 FT BELOW AND 300 FT TO STARBOARD. TCASII THEN REVERSED AND I STOPPED AT 12500 FT. THE THREAT THEN CLRED. ATC WAS ADVISED AND WE COMPLETED THE APCH AND LNDG.
