Narrative:

We had just landed on runway 22L at ewr. We exited the runway at taxiway a. While in the final stage of the rollout, the local controller instructed us to taxi to and hold short of runway 22R and to remain on his frequency for subsequent crossing clearance. Because of poor markings and my uncertainty of the hold short location for the runway (22R), I held well short of the runway hold marking. We were instructed to taxi closer to the runway. (I assume, to facilitate a more timely crossing following departing traffic.) I slowly taxied forward, looking for the runway holding line. We never were able to identify the line due to its poor paint condition. I stopped my aircraft with the nose about 10 ft into the runway hold line. The local controller, obviously irritated, then cleared us to cross the runway.

Title: AN ACR LGT TAXIED ONTO AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative: WE HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 22L AT EWR. WE EXITED THE RWY AT TXWY A. WHILE IN THE FINAL STAGE OF THE ROLLOUT, THE LCL CTLR INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI TO AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22R AND TO REMAIN ON HIS FREQ FOR SUBSEQUENT XING CLRNC. BECAUSE OF POOR MARKINGS AND MY UNCERTAINTY OF THE HOLD SHORT LOCATION FOR THE RWY (22R), I HELD WELL SHORT OF THE RWY HOLD MARKING. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TAXI CLOSER TO THE RWY. (I ASSUME, TO FACILITATE A MORE TIMELY XING FOLLOWING DEPARTING TFC.) I SLOWLY TAXIED FORWARD, LOOKING FOR THE RWY HOLDING LINE. WE NEVER WERE ABLE TO IDENT THE LINE DUE TO ITS POOR PAINT CONDITION. I STOPPED MY ACFT WITH THE NOSE ABOUT 10 FT INTO THE RWY HOLD LINE. THE LCL CTLR, OBVIOUSLY IRRITATED, THEN CLRED US TO CROSS THE RWY.
