Narrative:
First part of 13L closed for taxi only. Not marked very well. I could not tell just how much was closed for taxi. I began takeoff, then saw where the 'taxi only' area was. Not marked very clearly at all from takeoff area. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporting captain states that ATIS warned that part of runway 13L was closed due to construction. The construction is a new taxiway to the cargo area. No one was working at the time. The crew taxied down the runway, added power for takeoff, then noticed the rather obscure markings still further ahead. The reporter has not heard from the FAA on this incident. He does not know if the construction is complete. The reporter knows of other aircraft that have made the same mistake on this runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR LTT TOOK OFF ON THE CLOSED PART OF A PARTIALLY CLOSED RWY.
Narrative: FIRST PART OF 13L CLOSED FOR TAXI ONLY. NOT MARKED VERY WELL. I COULD NOT TELL JUST HOW MUCH WAS CLOSED FOR TAXI. I BEGAN TKOF, THEN SAW WHERE THE 'TAXI ONLY' AREA WAS. NOT MARKED VERY CLRLY AT ALL FROM TKOF AREA. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTING CAPT STATES THAT ATIS WARNED THAT PART OF RWY 13L WAS CLOSED DUE TO CONSTRUCTION. THE CONSTRUCTION IS A NEW TXWY TO THE CARGO AREA. NO ONE WAS WORKING AT THE TIME. THE CREW TAXIED DOWN THE RWY, ADDED PWR FOR TKOF, THEN NOTICED THE RATHER OBSCURE MARKINGS STILL FURTHER AHEAD. THE RPTR HAS NOT HEARD FROM THE FAA ON THIS INCIDENT. HE DOES NOT KNOW IF THE CONSTRUCTION IS COMPLETE. THE RPTR KNOWS OF OTHER ACFT THAT HAVE MADE THE SAME MISTAKE ON THIS RWY.
