Narrative:

Aircraft was cleared for civet 4 profile descent and ILS 25L approach to lax. First officer with 2 months experience in glass cockpit aircraft was flying. During initial stage of ILS, aircraft was too fast and descending at too rapid a rate. While concentrating on helping first officer slow aircraft and arrest descent rate, aircraft passed over downe fix approximately 900 ft below charted altitude of 4000 ft. Approach controller inquired about our altitude and we were informed to maintain charted altitudes, which we did. This problem occurred because I neglected to impress upon first officer importance of staying on charted altitudes while we were working on speed and descent adjustments. Glass cockpits are great but take some time getting used to. My mistake was not being more assertive with my new first officer, and not briefing beforehand the initial altitude restrictions of this particular approach. By the time I saw the altitude on the 'pfd' we had descended too low for the restriction -- this approach starts 33 mi from the airport, which is unusual, but with a new guy, I found out you have to cover all 33 mi, not just the final portion of the procedure.

Title: ALT XING RESTRICTION NOT COMPLIED WITH. NON ADHERENCE TO ATC PROC CLRNC INSTRUCTION.

Narrative: ACFT WAS CLRED FOR CIVET 4 PROFILE DSCNT AND ILS 25L APCH TO LAX. FO WITH 2 MONTHS EXPERIENCE IN GLASS COCKPIT ACFT WAS FLYING. DURING INITIAL STAGE OF ILS, ACFT WAS TOO FAST AND DSNDING AT TOO RAPID A RATE. WHILE CONCENTRATING ON HELPING FO SLOW ACFT AND ARREST DSCNT RATE, ACFT PASSED OVER DOWNE FIX APPROX 900 FT BELOW CHARTED ALT OF 4000 FT. APCH CTLR INQUIRED ABOUT OUR ALT AND WE WERE INFORMED TO MAINTAIN CHARTED ALTS, WHICH WE DID. THIS PROB OCCURRED BECAUSE I NEGLECTED TO IMPRESS UPON FO IMPORTANCE OF STAYING ON CHARTED ALTS WHILE WE WERE WORKING ON SPD AND DSCNT ADJUSTMENTS. GLASS COCKPITS ARE GREAT BUT TAKE SOME TIME GETTING USED TO. MY MISTAKE WAS NOT BEING MORE ASSERTIVE WITH MY NEW FO, AND NOT BRIEFING BEFOREHAND THE INITIAL ALT RESTRICTIONS OF THIS PARTICULAR APCH. BY THE TIME I SAW THE ALT ON THE 'PFD' WE HAD DSNDED TOO LOW FOR THE RESTRICTION -- THIS APCH STARTS 33 MI FROM THE ARPT, WHICH IS UNUSUAL, BUT WITH A NEW GUY, I FOUND OUT YOU HAVE TO COVER ALL 33 MI, NOT JUST THE FINAL PORTION OF THE PROC.
