Narrative:

In sum: both crewmen of an air carrier light transport reported an incident where they took off on a ferry flight with both main gear pins in place. The main gear doors were closed and the first officer did not open them. The pins had very short flags that did not fall outside of the gear doors. The time was early (oh dark 45). Maintenance assured the flight crew, in answer to a direct question, that the pins had been removed, although the required logbook entry had not been made. Both flight crew men looked where the pins should have been stowed on the aircraft and did not see that they were not there. When the main gear would not come up, the crew returned and landed without further incident.
