Narrative:
I was flying small aircraft from rhv to Q68 at 5500 ft at 148 KTS when a loud exhaust or engine noise began. I pulled back power to idle and started looking for a place to land. I saw modesto airport straight ahead. I looked on my chart and called modesto tower on 120.0. No answer. I listened to ATIS on 127.7 but they did not give the tower frequency. I called flight watch and did not receive an answer. I kept calling the tower but no answer. By that time I was left downwind for runway 28L and no traffic was on the runway, runup area or on the taxiway. I landed and got off of the runway as soon as possible. The fuel truck came over and asked if I was ok and told me to call the tower. I told the tower my problem and my concern for an in-flight engine fire as the right hand exhaust manifold had fractured and was pumping 1400 degrees F exhaust into the engine compartment. My sectional was due to be replaced in apr/93 so I had the wrong frequency for modesto tower.

Title: PLT OF AN SMA SEL PVT ACFT FAILED TO ESTABLISH 2-WAY RADIO COMS WITH CTL TWR WHEN FORCED TO MAKE AN EMER LNDG DUE ENG PROB.
Narrative: I WAS FLYING SMA FROM RHV TO Q68 AT 5500 FT AT 148 KTS WHEN A LOUD EXHAUST OR ENG NOISE BEGAN. I PULLED BACK PWR TO IDLE AND STARTED LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO LAND. I SAW MODESTO ARPT STRAIGHT AHEAD. I LOOKED ON MY CHART AND CALLED MODESTO TWR ON 120.0. NO ANSWER. I LISTENED TO ATIS ON 127.7 BUT THEY DID NOT GIVE THE TWR FREQ. I CALLED FLT WATCH AND DID NOT RECEIVE AN ANSWER. I KEPT CALLING THE TWR BUT NO ANSWER. BY THAT TIME I WAS L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 28L AND NO TFC WAS ON THE RWY, RUNUP AREA OR ON THE TXWY. I LANDED AND GOT OFF OF THE RWY ASAP. THE FUEL TRUCK CAME OVER AND ASKED IF I WAS OK AND TOLD ME TO CALL THE TWR. I TOLD THE TWR MY PROB AND MY CONCERN FOR AN INFLT ENG FIRE AS THE R HAND EXHAUST MANIFOLD HAD FRACTURED AND WAS PUMPING 1400 DEGS F EXHAUST INTO THE ENG COMPARTMENT. MY SECTIONAL WAS DUE TO BE REPLACED IN APR/93 SO I HAD THE WRONG FREQ FOR MODESTO TWR.
