Narrative:
At cruise we requested oceanic clearance via ACARS. We had requested track 'V' which included bancs, 46 north/50 west. What we received was the following clearance. 'Air carrier flight number, cleared to lfpg via bancs route 45/50, 48/40, 50/30, 50/20, 50/15 kenuk expect FL310 mach .830.' the PNF read back the clearance as follows 'air carrier flight number, cleared track 'V' bancs 45N/50W, 48N/40W, 50N/30W, 50N/20W, 50N/15W kenuk expect FL310 mach .83.' after bancs we were proceeding to 46N/50W when center called and asked where we were heading. The misunderstanding was cleared up and we proceeded to 45N/50W as cleared. The confusion came in the clearance given. The word via was confused with track 'V' and the point bancs was a route point on track 'V' as well. In the future, a rerte received via ACARS could be or better yet, should be specifically addressed with the words rerte.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A WDB ACR ACFT FAILED TO FOLLOW THE CLRNC RTE DURING AN OCEANIC RTE RESULTING IN ARTCC INTERVENTION TO BRING THE ACFT BACK TO ASSIGNED RTE.
Narrative: AT CRUISE WE REQUESTED OCEANIC CLRNC VIA ACARS. WE HAD REQUESTED TRACK 'V' WHICH INCLUDED BANCS, 46 N/50 W. WHAT WE RECEIVED WAS THE FOLLOWING CLRNC. 'ACR FLT NUMBER, CLRED TO LFPG VIA BANCS RTE 45/50, 48/40, 50/30, 50/20, 50/15 KENUK EXPECT FL310 MACH .830.' THE PNF READ BACK THE CLRNC AS FOLLOWS 'ACR FLT NUMBER, CLRED TRACK 'V' BANCS 45N/50W, 48N/40W, 50N/30W, 50N/20W, 50N/15W KENUK EXPECT FL310 MACH .83.' AFTER BANCS WE WERE PROCEEDING TO 46N/50W WHEN CTR CALLED AND ASKED WHERE WE WERE HEADING. THE MISUNDERSTANDING WAS CLRED UP AND WE PROCEEDED TO 45N/50W AS CLRED. THE CONFUSION CAME IN THE CLRNC GIVEN. THE WORD VIA WAS CONFUSED WITH TRACK 'V' AND THE POINT BANCS WAS A RTE POINT ON TRACK 'V' AS WELL. IN THE FUTURE, A RERTE RECEIVED VIA ACARS COULD BE OR BETTER YET, SHOULD BE SPECIFICALLY ADDRESSED WITH THE WORDS RERTE.
