Narrative:
Second occurrence of a lost communication with ZID while being handed off to canton/akron approach. On aug/xx/93 at about XX00 local time, we ended up about 25 mi from the airport (cak) at cruise altitude (15000 ft). I tried center on the frequency we were taking to him on, but no response. I went to cak approach where the rest of flight was normal. On aug/xx/93 same approximately time and place, same scenario except I called ZID to see if they were going to hand us off to cak approach since I hadn't heard from them in a while. He (ZID) said he was getting ready to hand us off and to descend at pilot's discretion to 11000 ft. We started a descent. When at 11000 ft and within 25 NM of cak, I called center with no response, so I went to cak approach frequency and told them what happened. He said 'the computer handed us off so it was a legal handoff.' it seems that this late at night in that area with possible sector consolidation we are getting out of range of someone's remote communication outlet.

Title: FLC OF AN LTT ACR ACFT LOST COMS WITH ARTCC BEFORE ESTABLISHING COM WITH APCH CTL.
Narrative: SECOND OCCURRENCE OF A LOST COM WITH ZID WHILE BEING HANDED OFF TO CANTON/AKRON APCH. ON AUG/XX/93 AT ABOUT XX00 LCL TIME, WE ENDED UP ABOUT 25 MI FROM THE ARPT (CAK) AT CRUISE ALT (15000 FT). I TRIED CTR ON THE FREQ WE WERE TAKING TO HIM ON, BUT NO RESPONSE. I WENT TO CAK APCH WHERE THE REST OF FLT WAS NORMAL. ON AUG/XX/93 SAME APPROX TIME AND PLACE, SAME SCENARIO EXCEPT I CALLED ZID TO SEE IF THEY WERE GOING TO HAND US OFF TO CAK APCH SINCE I HADN'T HEARD FROM THEM IN A WHILE. HE (ZID) SAID HE WAS GETTING READY TO HAND US OFF AND TO DSND AT PLT'S DISCRETION TO 11000 FT. WE STARTED A DSCNT. WHEN AT 11000 FT AND WITHIN 25 NM OF CAK, I CALLED CTR WITH NO RESPONSE, SO I WENT TO CAK APCH FREQ AND TOLD THEM WHAT HAPPENED. HE SAID 'THE COMPUTER HANDED US OFF SO IT WAS A LEGAL HDOF.' IT SEEMS THAT THIS LATE AT NIGHT IN THAT AREA WITH POSSIBLE SECTOR CONSOLIDATION WE ARE GETTING OUT OF RANGE OF SOMEONE'S REMOTE COM OUTLET.
