Narrative:
Approximately 40 east of ilc, eastbound ilc direct fam on an omega route. We requested a turn to the right to clear an area of WX. Center preferred we make the turn to the left. We made a turn to approach 080 degrees, then questioned the center (ZLC) as to when we could go right of course. He stated we were now clear of the military area and could go right of the 090 degree course. As I rolled out on my 110 degree heading, we were commanded by ZLC to make an immediate turn to 070 degrees. As we started the turn we got an RA on the TCASII to descend, descend and turn. We did. Through 32000 ft we got a TA on the TCASII of traffic at 31000 ft. We advised ATC of our TCASII RA. Stopped the descent at 31700 ft. The 33000 ft RA was resolved and we climbed back to 33000 ft. No RA on the 31000 traffic. Conflict resolved. If the controller had been just a little bit more informative (in example) 'you have air carrier nebound at 33000 ft off your right' the problem would never have developed. It is good to see that the TCASII and ATC system works when everything goes to hell.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR LGT CLBED. TURNED, AND LEVELED OFF IN RESPONSE TO 2 TCASII COMMANDS.
Narrative: APPROX 40 E OF ILC, EBOUND ILC DIRECT FAM ON AN OMEGA RTE. WE REQUESTED A TURN TO THE R TO CLR AN AREA OF WX. CTR PREFERRED WE MAKE THE TURN TO THE L. WE MADE A TURN TO APCH 080 DEGS, THEN QUESTIONED THE CTR (ZLC) AS TO WHEN WE COULD GO R OF COURSE. HE STATED WE WERE NOW CLR OF THE MIL AREA AND COULD GO R OF THE 090 DEG COURSE. AS I ROLLED OUT ON MY 110 DEG HDG, WE WERE COMMANDED BY ZLC TO MAKE AN IMMEDIATE TURN TO 070 DEGS. AS WE STARTED THE TURN WE GOT AN RA ON THE TCASII TO DSND, DSND AND TURN. WE DID. THROUGH 32000 FT WE GOT A TA ON THE TCASII OF TFC AT 31000 FT. WE ADVISED ATC OF OUR TCASII RA. STOPPED THE DSCNT AT 31700 FT. THE 33000 FT RA WAS RESOLVED AND WE CLBED BACK TO 33000 FT. NO RA ON THE 31000 TFC. CONFLICT RESOLVED. IF THE CTLR HAD BEEN JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE INFORMATIVE (IN EXAMPLE) 'YOU HAVE ACR NEBOUND AT 33000 FT OFF YOUR R' THE PROB WOULD NEVER HAVE DEVELOPED. IT IS GOOD TO SEE THAT THE TCASII AND ATC SYS WORKS WHEN EVERYTHING GOES TO HELL.
