Narrative:
Departing runway 16L at sea, aircraft flight director commanded turn to right prior to 5 mi sea fix (elmaa departure). LNAV selected. Controller intervened. Told us to fly heading back to left 160 degree heading and climb to 6000 ft. Complied with controller instructions and resumed SID. FMC's sea-sfo elmaa departure selected during preflight. No evasive action was necessary. Informed company maintenance and was advised engineering would be notified. Supplemental information from acn 249883: verification of departure SID confirmed right turn should be commenced at 5 DME. Company notified of programming error in navigation system.
