In sum: an air carrier mechanic was ordered by his director of maintenance to falsify a maintenance write off. The mechanic was ordered to disable an engine fire detector (1 of 4) and sign it off as having been replaced. An FAA maintenance inspector found the discrepancy and threatened sanctions against the company. The director of maintenance has since resigned and the reporting mechanic, who was on initial hiring probation, has been suspended by his company for 7 days.

Title: MECH OF AN ACR FALSIFIED AN ACFT RECORD BY STATING THAT A PART HAD BEEN REMOVED AND REPLACED WHEN IT HAD NOT BEEN.

Narrative: IN SUM: AN ACR MECH WAS ORDERED BY HIS DIRECTOR OF MAINT TO FALSIFY A MAINT WRITE OFF. THE MECH WAS ORDERED TO DISABLE AN ENG FIRE DETECTOR (1 OF 4) AND SIGN IT OFF AS HAVING BEEN REPLACED. AN FAA MAINT INSPECTOR FOUND THE DISCREPANCY AND THREATENED SANCTIONS AGAINST THE COMPANY. THE DIRECTOR OF MAINT HAS SINCE RESIGNED AND THE RPTING MECH, WHO WAS ON INITIAL HIRING PROBATION, HAS BEEN SUSPENDED BY HIS COMPANY FOR 7 DAYS.
