Narrative:
Flight plan read: sea.J70.mlp.J136.bil.mcw.JVL3.ord. Pre departure clearance read: J90.mhw.mlp. Sea.J70.mlp.J136.bil. Mcw.JVL3.ord. ?Npr. The line J90.mhw.mlp is the preferred routing. The line sea.J70.mlp etc, was the flight plan routing. No amendment to the flight plan routing was received from clearance delivery. We assumed then we were expected to fly sea.J70.mlp. Center, however, expected us to fly J90.mhw.mlp. Before we reached 80 DME east of sea on J70, we were cleared 075 degree heading direct dpr. We were questioned about our routing because we were the third company aircraft in a row to interpret the same clearance in this way. We never caused a conflict. In fact, due to our direct routing, probably remained within the J90 airspace. However, the fact that 3 crew all interpreted the same clearance in the same way leads me to believe that the pre departure clearance procedure for a route change should be highlighted and be more apparent to the crews. Our dispatch has since been made aware of the problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR WDB FO STATES THAT HIS COMPANY'S PDC PRESENTATION DOES NOT HIGHLIGHT A ROUTING CHANGE.
Narrative: FLT PLAN READ: SEA.J70.MLP.J136.BIL.MCW.JVL3.ORD. PDC READ: J90.MHW.MLP. SEA.J70.MLP.J136.BIL. MCW.JVL3.ORD. ?NPR. THE LINE J90.MHW.MLP IS THE PREFERRED ROUTING. THE LINE SEA.J70.MLP ETC, WAS THE FLT PLAN ROUTING. NO AMENDMENT TO THE FLT PLAN ROUTING WAS RECEIVED FROM CLRNC DELIVERY. WE ASSUMED THEN WE WERE EXPECTED TO FLY SEA.J70.MLP. CTR, HOWEVER, EXPECTED US TO FLY J90.MHW.MLP. BEFORE WE REACHED 80 DME E OF SEA ON J70, WE WERE CLRED 075 DEG HDG DIRECT DPR. WE WERE QUESTIONED ABOUT OUR ROUTING BECAUSE WE WERE THE THIRD COMPANY ACFT IN A ROW TO INTERPRET THE SAME CLRNC IN THIS WAY. WE NEVER CAUSED A CONFLICT. IN FACT, DUE TO OUR DIRECT ROUTING, PROBABLY REMAINED WITHIN THE J90 AIRSPACE. HOWEVER, THE FACT THAT 3 CREW ALL INTERPRETED THE SAME CLRNC IN THE SAME WAY LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE PDC PROC FOR A RTE CHANGE SHOULD BE HIGHLIGHTED AND BE MORE APPARENT TO THE CREWS. OUR DISPATCH HAS SINCE BEEN MADE AWARE OF THE PROB.
