Narrative:
On a VFR flight to dayton, oh, I made an unscheduled fuel stop at what I believed to be kokomo, in, airport. It turned out to be grissum AFB about 9 mi north and 5 mi west of kokomo. I tried to contact kokomo unicom but received no answer. (It turned out that the only FBO just started business the previous day.) I did see a tower but thought it was inoperative. At no time did I get a red light, as I passed downwind or on final, for the southwest runway. I wasn't aware of my mistake till I was stopped by the base security police on the ramp. I was allowed to proceed after they photocopied my license and aircraft registration. I guess my mistake was too eager to get on the ground to go to the bathroom and get fuel! A long descent to pattern altitude obstructed my vision from seeing the correct airport.
