Narrative:
On J91 near johnn intersection at FL310, we encountered severe turbulence while in cruise deviating around thunderstorms. Nearest cell painted on radar was 35 mi west. Vertical oscillations lasted approximately 7-10 seconds with altitude variations of plus or minus 200 ft and airspeed deviations of plus or minus 30 KTS at .78 mach. Seat belt sign was on and all passenger were seated. Prior to this only light turbulence was encountered. On landing at bna, 2 flight attendants and 2 passenger went to the hospital for examinations.
