Narrative:

It was discovered by the flight crew at about top of climb that the flight had been dispatched as an ETOPS flight. We were under the impression that it was non-ETOPS since the route was less than 75 mins in a 'benign' area (this aircraft is approved for 120 mins ETOPS in the north atlantic) and we have previously operated this aircraft in this airspace non- ETOPS. Since special pre-departure checks and additional maintenance action is required for ETOPS flts (not completed for this flight), it is essential that we have proper communication between the flcs, dispatch and maintenance as to whether or not a particular flight is being operated ETOPS or needs to be.
