Narrative:
Flying an small transport on a right downwind (120 KTS) I was told my only traffic was an small aircraft on a 2 1/2 mi base to final. I did not see the traffic but turned a base myself at 2 1/2 mi. I thought plenty of time passed and that the small aircraft was close and low on final. The tower controller then asked me if I had the traffic. I replied no. He said 'you just cut him off. ' I looked to my left and there was the small aircraft. I feel the contributing factors to this incident were an initial position report on the small aircraft that was obviously inaccurate, together with my turn to base without first seeing my traffic.
