Narrative:
Takeoff clearance received from gainesville FSS was to climb to 2000 ft on runway heading and contact ZJX on 134.4 (uncontrolled airport operations). At 1000 ft on climb out 3 attempts were made to contact center with no answer. Aircraft leveled at 2000 ft on runway heading with 1 more attempt to ZJX made. A short, broken transmission was heard, which led us to believe we were too low to pick them up. Approximately 10-12 mi off the departure end of runway 28 are 3 large towers. The largest 1050 ft high. Since we could not contact ZJX and due to the close proximity of the towers and power plant, we started a right turn to north and began a slow climb while trying to contact center. At 3500 ft to 4000 ft we were finally able to contact center on the second attempt after climbing and told them we were climbing out and turning north. The controller questioned our last clearance and the reason for deviating from it. We told him we were unable to contact him and that we had become concerned with the ht of the towers. We were given a clearance to climb and told to head direct to taylor VOR. Radar contact was established at approximately 10000 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLRED TO CLB ON RWY HDG TO 2000 FT. THEN UNABLE TO CONTACT ATC.
Narrative: TKOF CLRNC RECEIVED FROM GAINESVILLE FSS WAS TO CLB TO 2000 FT ON RWY HDG AND CONTACT ZJX ON 134.4 (UNCTLED ARPT OPS). AT 1000 FT ON CLBOUT 3 ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO CONTACT CTR WITH NO ANSWER. ACFT LEVELED AT 2000 FT ON RWY HDG WITH 1 MORE ATTEMPT TO ZJX MADE. A SHORT, BROKEN XMISSION WAS HEARD, WHICH LED US TO BELIEVE WE WERE TOO LOW TO PICK THEM UP. APPROX 10-12 MI OFF THE DEP END OF RWY 28 ARE 3 LARGE TWRS. THE LARGEST 1050 FT HIGH. SINCE WE COULD NOT CONTACT ZJX AND DUE TO THE CLOSE PROX OF THE TWRS AND PWR PLANT, WE STARTED A R TURN TO N AND BEGAN A SLOW CLB WHILE TRYING TO CONTACT CTR. AT 3500 FT TO 4000 FT WE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO CONTACT CTR ON THE SECOND ATTEMPT AFTER CLBING AND TOLD THEM WE WERE CLBING OUT AND TURNING N. THE CTLR QUESTIONED OUR LAST CLRNC AND THE REASON FOR DEVIATING FROM IT. WE TOLD HIM WE WERE UNABLE TO CONTACT HIM AND THAT WE HAD BECOME CONCERNED WITH THE HT OF THE TWRS. WE WERE GIVEN A CLRNC TO CLB AND TOLD TO HEAD DIRECT TO TAYLOR VOR. RADAR CONTACT WAS ESTABLISHED AT APPROX 10000 FT.
