Narrative:
Out of new york and after reaching cruise altitude, we were cleared direct to elmira. After, we were cleared direct to aylmer. Not being familiar with all VOR identifiers on our routing, it is easy to miss one or not verify a similar sounding one. We were cleared direct elmira. I thought the controller said aylmer and that was the point inserted to go direct to. Center later came on and verified our routing. I think I said direct aylmer, or it was the case of saying one and doing the other.
