Narrative:
When passenger door was opened for deplaning, the escape slide came out of its housing. As there were no mechanics at the field and it appeared a lengthy delay was about to occur, we replaced the slide in its housing and departed. I did not realize at the time that a safety check by a qualified inspector was required. I believe a reminder by the company of this requirement would prevent this problem from recurring.
