Narrative:
About 180 mi from sju, san juan center cleared us to cross 40 NM northwest of sju at 11000 ft. At our present altitude of 33000 ft, I figured a descent distance of about 80 NM to get down to 11000 ft and slow to 250 KTS. Unfortunately, I failed to add the additional 40 NM northwest of sju as the clearance was issued and found myself trying desperately to lose altitude by 40 NM out. When I realized we were not going to make the crossing, I stated this fact to the captain and told him we would be lucky to make 16000 ft. He made no attempt to contact center about our situation and we ended up crossing the 40 NM point at about 16500 ft and 340 KTS. I later brought the altitude incursion up in conversation when we blocked in and he acted surprised at my seriousness about possibly being violated for not informing ATC. I know I made the mistake, but I also gave him plenty of warning to make the call to ATC. I believe our discussion after the fact helped him to realize the seriousness of an ATC clearance.

Title: AN ACR HVT FRTR MISSED ITS ALT XING RESTR AND SPD RESTRICTION ON DSCNT.
Narrative: ABOUT 180 MI FROM SJU, SAN JUAN CTR CLRED US TO CROSS 40 NM NW OF SJU AT 11000 FT. AT OUR PRESENT ALT OF 33000 FT, I FIGURED A DSCNT DISTANCE OF ABOUT 80 NM TO GET DOWN TO 11000 FT AND SLOW TO 250 KTS. UNFORTUNATELY, I FAILED TO ADD THE ADDITIONAL 40 NM NW OF SJU AS THE CLRNC WAS ISSUED AND FOUND MYSELF TRYING DESPERATELY TO LOSE ALT BY 40 NM OUT. WHEN I REALIZED WE WERE NOT GOING TO MAKE THE XING, I STATED THIS FACT TO THE CAPT AND TOLD HIM WE WOULD BE LUCKY TO MAKE 16000 FT. HE MADE NO ATTEMPT TO CONTACT CTR ABOUT OUR SIT AND WE ENDED UP XING THE 40 NM POINT AT ABOUT 16500 FT AND 340 KTS. I LATER BROUGHT THE ALT INCURSION UP IN CONVERSATION WHEN WE BLOCKED IN AND HE ACTED SURPRISED AT MY SERIOUSNESS ABOUT POSSIBLY BEING VIOLATED FOR NOT INFORMING ATC. I KNOW I MADE THE MISTAKE, BUT I ALSO GAVE HIM PLENTY OF WARNING TO MAKE THE CALL TO ATC. I BELIEVE OUR DISCUSSION AFTER THE FACT HELPED HIM TO REALIZE THE SERIOUSNESS OF AN ATC CLRNC.
