Narrative:
Captain was talking on the radio and approach gave us a clearance to contact the tower at the marker, cleared visual to runway 26L. Approach also cleared an MD80 on a simultaneous visual approach to runway 26R. We were flying a wingtip-to-wingtip parallel approach. Due to the close proximity of the other aircraft, checklist, and other duties, the captain failed to contact the tower for clearance to land. After landing, I realized we were still on approach frequency and, as we were turning off of the runway, I called the tower and was issued a hold short instruction and subsequent taxi instructions as normal. The clearance to contact tower was given a number of mi from the marker, and the added workload of flying an approach in a formation of approximately 150-200 ft separation (wing-to-wing) as well as normal duties of checklists and announcements, it was not difficult to miss the tower radio call. A reminder from approach over the marker would have been helpful in this case.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MLG LANDED WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: CAPT WAS TALKING ON THE RADIO AND APCH GAVE US A CLRNC TO CONTACT THE TWR AT THE MARKER, CLRED VISUAL TO RWY 26L. APCH ALSO CLRED AN MD80 ON A SIMULTANEOUS VISUAL APCH TO RWY 26R. WE WERE FLYING A WINGTIP-TO-WINGTIP PARALLEL APCH. DUE TO THE CLOSE PROX OF THE OTHER ACFT, CHKLIST, AND OTHER DUTIES, THE CAPT FAILED TO CONTACT THE TWR FOR CLRNC TO LAND. AFTER LNDG, I REALIZED WE WERE STILL ON APCH FREQ AND, AS WE WERE TURNING OFF OF THE RWY, I CALLED THE TWR AND WAS ISSUED A HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTION AND SUBSEQUENT TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AS NORMAL. THE CLRNC TO CONTACT TWR WAS GIVEN A NUMBER OF MI FROM THE MARKER, AND THE ADDED WORKLOAD OF FLYING AN APCH IN A FORMATION OF APPROX 150-200 FT SEPARATION (WING-TO-WING) AS WELL AS NORMAL DUTIES OF CHKLISTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS, IT WAS NOT DIFFICULT TO MISS THE TWR RADIO CALL. A REMINDER FROM APCH OVER THE MARKER WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL IN THIS CASE.
