Narrative:
Boston ATC was working me on an IFR flight. I noticed approximately 1 1/4 inch of ice on leading edge plus airspeed indicator indicating 125 KTS. DME speed on ground reduced to approximately 80- 90 KTS at the same time. I requested lower altitude to 6000 ft which I received. The outside air temperature at 6000 ft was 28 degrees F, ice still persisted. Requested lower. Was advised in approximately 15 mi they could steer me west and at that point could get lower away from mountainous terrain. They lowered me to 4200 ft. At that point I broke out of overcast. Outside air temperature was 30 degrees F, ice still persisted. The further I got to alb (where I landed) the outside air temperature rose steadily. The ice eventually peeled away. The airspeed rose. The ground speed rose and I landed at alb. Rest of trip uneventful to frg. Boston did a wonderful job deviating me from my original flight plan and eventually getting me to an altitude that would better enable me to deal with this ice buildup.

Title: PLT OF AN SMA SEL PVT ACFT WAS FORCED TO DSND ON AN IFR FLT AFTER THE ACFT SPD SLOWED DUE TO WING ICE BUILDUP.
Narrative: BOSTON ATC WAS WORKING ME ON AN IFR FLT. I NOTICED APPROX 1 1/4 INCH OF ICE ON LEADING EDGE PLUS AIRSPD INDICATOR INDICATING 125 KTS. DME SPD ON GND REDUCED TO APPROX 80- 90 KTS AT THE SAME TIME. I REQUESTED LOWER ALT TO 6000 FT WHICH I RECEIVED. THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMP AT 6000 FT WAS 28 DEGS F, ICE STILL PERSISTED. REQUESTED LOWER. WAS ADVISED IN APPROX 15 MI THEY COULD STEER ME W AND AT THAT POINT COULD GET LOWER AWAY FROM MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN. THEY LOWERED ME TO 4200 FT. AT THAT POINT I BROKE OUT OF OVCST. OUTSIDE AIR TEMP WAS 30 DEGS F, ICE STILL PERSISTED. THE FURTHER I GOT TO ALB (WHERE I LANDED) THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMP ROSE STEADILY. THE ICE EVENTUALLY PEELED AWAY. THE AIRSPD ROSE. THE GND SPD ROSE AND I LANDED AT ALB. REST OF TRIP UNEVENTFUL TO FRG. BOSTON DID A WONDERFUL JOB DEVIATING ME FROM MY ORIGINAL FLT PLAN AND EVENTUALLY GETTING ME TO AN ALT THAT WOULD BETTER ENABLE ME TO DEAL WITH THIS ICE BUILDUP.
