Narrative:
#1 oil quantity placarded inoperative was advised that when engine start was complete, indicator would probably work. Visual inspection was needed at destination. Indicator did work. At msy en route stop to hrl maintenance, was not available. Indicator worked, so we pressed on to hrl -- made a visual inspection there and an information write-up as to normal operation of oil quantity indicator. MEL procedure had changed recently and now a visual check before every takeoff must be made. Based on the fact that an indicator worked and no maintenance available, we continued management and flight safety were notified.
