Narrative:
Engine started running rough shortly after passing point mckenzie. I started to return to merrill field but the engine got worse and I was unable to hold altitude. I made an emergency landing on sleeper strip in approximately 2 ft of wet snow. The snow pulled the nose gear out of the plane. Damage was limited to forward of the firewall. At this time the engine problem is still undiagnosed. Other aircraft reported seeing smoke from the engine 'like a wwii fighter shot down in a movie'.
