Narrative:
Aircraft on approach to swo on extended downwind for runway 4. Started landing checklist 'gumps' -- when switched to left tank. Approximately 60 seconds later, power was lost and emergency restart procedures were initiated but never able to establish power. Attempts to land on highway and access ramp foiled by existing traffic. Landed east of n-s turnpike, down embankment, through fence and stopped in field approximately 100 ft from fence. No injuries to myself or 2 passenger. Flight time 3:10 with fuel burn of 10.2 gph. Started with 48 gallons on board. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that the aircraft received only minor damage as classified by the FAA inspector who investigated the incident. The aircraft nose gear was sheared off and the wing, horizontal stabilizer and the bottom of the fuselage were scratched and dented. No definite cause had been determined for the fuel starvation since there was still fuel in each tank.
