Narrative:
I had failed a portion of my IFR check ride. FAA designated examiner informed me to remove my foggles and relax, he will fly and land. I turned the controls to 'de' at his request. Crosswind from west, 'de' flew the pattern and set up for runway 18. 'De' asked approach speed used, I informed 70-75 mph. De positioned aircraft for crosswind landing. 'De' touched down at approximately mid field. Aircraft ran off runway approximately 40 yards. Propeller struck the ground and had minor damage. It could have been possibly avoided if I informed 'de' that I am PIC and I will fly the aircraft back to 1d2. I was under impression that 16000 hours ATP who is an examiner was competent to land aircraft. I followed his request. If faced with similar situation, I will advise examiner that he is an observer only, I will manipulate controls. Factors affecting judgement: examiner was a qualified pilot with 6000 hours of instruction and 16000 hours PIC time. I was intimidated by credentials and followed his request to let him land aircraft. I now realize PIC responsibilities remain mine during all check rides. I have reviewed FARS and will not turn controls over to an examiner if he/she requests I do in the future.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT OFF RWY, PROP HIT GND.
Narrative: I HAD FAILED A PORTION OF MY IFR CHK RIDE. FAA DESIGNATED EXAMINER INFORMED ME TO REMOVE MY FOGGLES AND RELAX, HE WILL FLY AND LAND. I TURNED THE CTLS TO 'DE' AT HIS REQUEST. XWIND FROM W, 'DE' FLEW THE PATTERN AND SET UP FOR RWY 18. 'DE' ASKED APCH SPD USED, I INFORMED 70-75 MPH. DE POSITIONED ACFT FOR XWIND LNDG. 'DE' TOUCHED DOWN AT APPROX MID FIELD. ACFT RAN OFF RWY APPROX 40 YARDS. PROP STRUCK THE GND AND HAD MINOR DAMAGE. IT COULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLY AVOIDED IF I INFORMED 'DE' THAT I AM PIC AND I WILL FLY THE ACFT BACK TO 1D2. I WAS UNDER IMPRESSION THAT 16000 HRS ATP WHO IS AN EXAMINER WAS COMPETENT TO LAND ACFT. I FOLLOWED HIS REQUEST. IF FACED WITH SIMILAR SIT, I WILL ADVISE EXAMINER THAT HE IS AN OBSERVER ONLY, I WILL MANIPULATE CTLS. FACTORS AFFECTING JUDGEMENT: EXAMINER WAS A QUALIFIED PLT WITH 6000 HRS OF INSTRUCTION AND 16000 HRS PIC TIME. I WAS INTIMIDATED BY CREDENTIALS AND FOLLOWED HIS REQUEST TO LET HIM LAND ACFT. I NOW REALIZE PIC RESPONSIBILITIES REMAIN MINE DURING ALL CHK RIDES. I HAVE REVIEWED FARS AND WILL NOT TURN CTLS OVER TO AN EXAMINER IF HE/SHE REQUESTS I DO IN THE FUTURE.
